Dear HUM friends,
After several intense and exciting recent Christian seasons (Advent and Christmas, Lent and Easter), we are quickly approaching another exciting time.
The end of the school year. Preschool and high school and college graduation events. All kinds of celebrations related to academic accomplishment!
How wonderful it is to see another generation of young people, wide-eyed and filled with intelligence and hope and courage, willing to take on the world!
These same young people know full well the condition of the world we are handing them. A world in trouble. A world in crisis. A world of insecurity and fear.
These same young people are also filled with energy and enthusiasm to take on this world. To change the world. To renew the values that made great countries great. That made great peoples great. That made great churches great. That made great disciples great!
They radiate a brilliance that gives us hope for the future. They reflect a curiosity and problem-solving ability to solve the world’s most challenging problems. They exude the kind of compassion that can heal the earth’s wounds, renew the environment, and bring about peace on earth.
They have raised up student leaders of whom we can be proud, leaders who will assume influential positions in government, business, education, theology, medicine and science, the arts, and many other fields that will affect future generations in profound ways.
I am pessimistic when I consider the horrible tragedies occurring in our world. I am even more optimistic when I think about our young graduates, who show promise of leaving the world a better place than they found it.
