Welcome to the Howland United Methodist Church
Website

On Wednesdays from September through May, we have Chancel Choir rehearsals for adults and high school youth at 7:00 p.m., directed by Frank McCauley. New voices are always welcomed with open arms! Opportunities are available for vocalists and instrumentalists for special music. Just come to practice or contact Frank McCauley for information on joining the choir or participating in the music ministry of our church. Each year, we set aside one Sunday to focus on the children in our country and our world. That Sunday is called Children's Sabbath. Setting aside a Sunday to talk about the problems children face isn't enough. What can you do to put your faith into action to seek justice for children?
  1. Inform others: Share the facts with friends and neighbors. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper.
  2. Reach out and help a child or family who is poor. Volunteer with or donate to an organization that is serving poor children.
  3. Pray for poor children, our nation and its leaders, and yourself to do all that you can to help children.
  4. Join the Children's Defense Fund's Religious Action list to connect to information, resources, legislative action alerts, and more to work for justice on behalf of our children. Visit www.childrensdefense.org/religiousaction/default.aspx to join.
  5. Write to your members of Congress and urge them to take a strong leadership role in ending child poverty in America.
We have many events occurring on Sundays and through the week. You can view the events by the month or by week. You can also see Upcoming Events highlighted, including Community Events taking place at HUM. You can also view Past Events that involved HUMmers.

We are always looking for photos of past HUM events to post on our website. If you'd like to share yours, please contact Deborah Lowman or leave them in the church office. They will be returned to you.
Social consciousness has always played an important part in Methodist history. It has always gone hand in hand with faith. Early Methodists opposed slavery, liquor traffic, gambling, industrial exploitation, and war. The church has supported education (since the 18th century), publishing (through the 19th and 20th centuries), women's rights (since the 1800's), charitable works (since the late 1800's), temperance (through the 1800's and 1900's), labor rights (since 1894), and world peace (since 1924). The United Methodist Church has a long history of addressing the social issues of the day. The General Conference has adopted a statement of social principles. These social principles are a prayerful and thoughtful effort to speak to the human issues in the contemporary world from a sound biblical and theological foundation as historically demonstrated in United Methodist traditions.
